Ship citadel world of warships8/25/2023 However, even with their old citadel heights, obtaining penetrating hits with cruiser AP shells only occurs at point blank range and full broadside, which is rare. There have only been two citadel adjustments so far the first one is back in June 2017 when Montana, Iowa, and Missouri had their citadels lowered to waterline level, the same height as the North Carolina, which means that it's still rather vulnerable when broadside. This is frankly an inaccurate statement, because you certainly can. Now, thanks the armor changes on BBs being lowered and a host of other changes during 2018 patches. You can blame the BB drivers complaining about getting "easy" to citadel with same ships 2 years ago. And with good secondary guns they are great at close range and mid range fights.Īs a cruiser ? You can't. I should mention that German Battleships have a fun trick to them, if they are within 16km or preferably 11km or less the chances of hitting their Citadels are very low thanks to special “turtleback armor” on their Citadels. That is why Heavy Cruisers And Battleships were created was to sink Cruisers and Battleships. Light Cruisers are mainly meant to fight Destroyers or other Light Cruisers. Light Cruisers simply do not usually carry heavy enough guns to pen the belt armor of a BB and will even struggle against heavy CA armor sometimes. Now if your wanting to citadel a Battleship you either need a Battleship or a Heavy Cruiser to accomplish this. While the pen drops off with distance regarding horizontal penetration, you can gain better penetration once again with some of the greatest distances in the game by having long range fire arc downwards into thinner deck armor, but this only done with some Heavy CAs and BBs. With Warships there is another interesting variable with velocity of shells vs armor of ships. Yet another thing that comes into play is shell velocity which varies depending on caliber and the velocity drops off with distance resulting in decreased pen. This is not so much for aerodynamic reasons, but I rather for better chances of deflecting enemy fire. ![]() Also armor angles do matter since just like in tanks a shell striking a flat armored surface at perfect 45° and will have highest chances of penetration as opposed to sloped or angled armor, that is why if you look at Tank history you see sloping or rounded off armor become increasingly common. And some ships are designed to resist damage from guns up to a particular caliber as well. Iowa has a 32mm Torpedo Bulge + Very low Armor Belt of 297mmĪmor thicknesses and gun Calibers certainly come into play. Massachusetts has a 32mm Torpedo Bulge + Very low Citadel Torpedo Bulkhead 274mm. North Carolina has a 305mm Armor Belt but the Citadel is real low. In short, it ain't happening with 203mm AP against Richelieu. Richelieu has a 32mm Torpedo Bulge + 330mm Armor Belt / Casemate + 50mm angled deck / turtleback behind that but not to the degree of German turtlebacks + 50mm Citadel Bulkhead. Vladivostok has a 370mm Armor Belt, nothing else.ĭon't even bother with Bismarck and Tirpitz with their turtleback schemes for Citadel hits, just get regular AP Pens. Some Tier VIII BB Citadel protection values. USN > German > French > IJN for 203mm AP Pen. Here's an Artillery Chart with a bunch of the Tier VIII Heavy Cruisers and you can see the greatly varying AP Penetration capabilities. Not to mention not all 203mm AP Penetration is created equal. Even then, as you climb the tiers there are a lot of very thick Battleship armor belts out there.Ĭan’t the USN heavies with superheavy shells do so? (Though of course they have to be crazy close.) ![]() The trick is being in close enough range to do this without BBs blasting you out of the water. But do remember they can do the same to you.Ī Heavy Cruiser with 203mm guns may be able to, but they need to be real close and get a broadside to have a chance in doing it. The chances for Citadels against another Cruiser skyrocket the closer in range you are. Your AP will work against other Cruisers to get Citadels, especially since some Cruisers are very badly protected. Light Cruisers don't really have the penetration capability to Citadel Battleships. Is this just something about x ship gun caliber vs x ship citadel armor thickness at a wierd angle or something? On the other hand, when I do the same into an enemy cruiser it seems like they are just a floating citadel that I can hit without even trying to. I have one question, how do I citadel a BB? Generally when a BB gives me broadside on my light cruisers and I swap to ap to try and hit citadels I aim waterline-center the ship but almost never get any citadel hits. I've been playing ships like the Emerald and the Budyonny quite a bit, I also have a t5 German BB and the T6 USN BB that I play a bit less frequently.
